"The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" brings the reader right into the world and thought process of the main character. It reads less like a detective novel and more as a character analysis of autism. The pages fly by, not in an attempt to solve who-dunnit, but to find out what will be said or done next. An entire universe of logic unfolds that the adult mind has trouble understanding, and yet Mark Haddon has used his years of experience to bring forward a very memorable literary character. I found the solution to the murder mystery slightly out of flow with the rest of the novel but it did not lessen my overall enjoyment.
This book was written from the perspective of an autistic boy. It presented an interesting world view, but I was disappointed with the ending. I was really into it at first, but by the middle I started to feel like I was reading the book version of an After School Special.
I am familiar with several forms of Austism and found this book incredibly touching. Not at all what I expected, it was a good story told from an unique point of view. I picked it up after hearing a number of other people rave about it, and am very glad I did. This should become a classic.
I think that I'm still not sure what to make of this book. It was entertaining and I liked it. But it was a lot of work, even for me. Sadly, there were a lot of characteristics that I shared with the main character. Too many, and I think that made me a lttle uncomfortable. There were many times throughout the book where I had to stop and say, "hmm, is that why I do that...?" or "I totally get where he's coming from!" Very unsettling for me. I guess that overall, I liked the book. It would have gotten more stars if the entire book would have been about the mystery that started the story and if all of the math problems would have been solved instead of just one at the back. Now I have to get out a pen and paper and try to remember how to do the quadratic equation...
A wonderful look at a unique mind. Telling this story from the point of view of a boy with autism/aspergers made it more immediate but his keen sense of observation also made the pathos of his parents situation seem somehow more tragic.
Humor is often found in seeing something suprising and while our protagonist claimed that he could tell no jokes, he had me laughing out loud at several spots.
I particularly liked how this ended. The other books that I've read that touch on this subject have all ended more bleakly. This one has some hopeful aspects.
This is a great read on so many levels, I'm glad that it's gotten the attention that it has.
Currently 4.5/5 Stars.

Loved this book. A whole new insight into the mind of an autistic person.
