Today I received a WL book that was obviously damaged by USPS and not the sender. I was wondering is there anyway to get my credit back???
The sender did purchase USPS tracking number. And this might be a bit of a rant...but shouldn't the post office be held responsible??? The package has a stamp on it that says "received in damage condition". I would like to know at what point it got damage lol. I am assuming my post office will not be able to do anything considering there is no insurance on the package. Unless someone knows otherwise??? The package was ran through something and ripped open leaving the cover half missing and shredded. lol
Anyway have any advice..I'd appreciate it lol
Thanks! -Amanda |

I'm pretty sure you have no way of getting your credit back. Books are sometimes lost or damaged in transit; senders accept the risk of loss, and requestors accept the risk of damage. It's too bad, though. I don't think the post office will accept responsibility unless the package was insured. How does PBS handle things in these cases? If you mark a book received and damaged by PO, do you get returned to FIFO in your earlier position? I hope so! |

I marked the book received, but with a problem. The problem being "damage by USPS". So I did get returned to FIFO to my earlier position. I don't know if I would order the same book again though...because then I would being using another credit it. It is a tough call. I know I could never repost this book to PBS...but maybe I could get a credit because there are 120 memebers wishing for it. |

I am curious. How was the book packaged?

It was wrapped with that brown paper...like what the brown grocery bags are made of.

I could not open the links to see any of the pics. Brown paper alone, IMHO, is not adequate to mail a HB. Either bubble wrap or a box of some sort are the best things to send HBs. Some folks really have no clue as to what the parcels are subjected to in the Post Office. Just a little extra care can make a big difference. That is a shame. |

I got a book in the mail recently that was badly damaged. The post office had put the book in a new mailer and enclosed their "loose mail" sheet, so I have no idea how the sender packaged it. The book had rips in the cover and gouges in the binding. I marked it RWAP - damage by USPS and chalked it up to bad luck. At least it's still readable. I pm'ed the sender as as FYI, but never heard back. |

So sorry that happened! The site has tried to spread the pain on USPS-damaged books. If it's returned to the sender, the sender loses out. If it is delivered to the requestor, the requestor takes the hit. The site can't cover our losses for USPS-damaged books. Each credit they give away has to be covered either by $ or by a book per IRS and accounting rules. I'm not sure they could keep membership free if they were to cover the credits on damaged books. Doesn't make it any more fun for you, but that's why you don't get a credit from the site. |
