I saw Dan Simmons' new book "Drood" at the bookstore yesterday and I was intrigued. Not only is it a HUGE novel (800+ pages) but the premise sounds very interesting and promising. I have never heard of Simmons as anything other than a SciFi writer and I don't read SciFi. It looks like he has a mystery series as well as a few stand alone mysteries. Is anyone familiar with the mysteries? Are they worth a read?

I read his last book- the historical horror story "The Terror" and loved loved loved it.  That said, he's definitely not an easy author.  His latest books, The Terror and now Drood are huge, dense, written in 19th century style prose and steeped in 19th century details.  I'm on the waitlist for Drood at my library, but I hope to get some of his older works off here too.

I read "The Terror" but gave up about half way into its 600+ pages.  Historical fiction doesn't really interest me, and the thing that was supposed to be so terrorizing wasn't really scary.  I just couldn't get into it.
