THE US SUBMARINE MEMPHIS should hve been mothballed decades ago. Instead, she is charged with one last, secret mission: to locate leaking containers of Russian nuclear fuel on the floor of the Arctic Ocean. Lead by the Bligh-like commander Lowell Hardy, the Memphis' crew deals with flaring tempers, faulty machinery, raging Arctic Seas, and their newest crewmate, Jerry Mitchell. Starts off slow with a lot of sub training and data. You will not be disappointed with the last third of the book and the ending. Superb book about the silent service.
Somewhat lacking in action, it's an interesting book on the average life of a submariner. It talks more about what it's like than actually going somewhere with the story.
as a former submariner this book is a little over the top but entertaining
Good under-seafaring tail of men in service, women bureaucrats on board and a AF pilot reject as a hero.
