This is the last book in the series. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in his conclusion (if this is indeed the end) because there are many threads left hanging. The writing of the book is engaging and the characters are all well designed. If you like alternate history about the 6th and 7th century of the Mediterranean and all the countries involved including Persia and don't mind reading about the dead being brought back to life (of a sort), then you will find this a good book. There are lots of maps which I found helpful. I did learn many new things about that era and that area. There are wars, living dead, Roman legions, magic from Egypt, Persia, and Constantinople. There is also magic or sorcery in Rome. The Jews are included as well as Mohammed and his life. There is also mention of a device (that I only found out about after reading this book) that has been recently discovered and the use of it is unknown. I found that intriguing. There are characters you love and those you hate. And the ending isn't cut and dried.
