Nicholas has given up every dream of love or joy in order to be the Prince of Glarien that he must be. But his cousin Carl has now kidnaped his intended bride and, without her, all is lost.

Then, beyond all hope, he finds a young woman who is a nearly exact double for the lost princess. If she will impersonate the princess, he may save everything, and so, she can not be allowed to say no.

Penelope is an ordinary girl with an uncommon background. She is the bastard daughter of a prince. But life has taught her to accept the life she knows and not go looking for more.

When this darkly beautiful prince sweeps into her life and demands her participation in a strange masquerade, she knows she must say no, but though she can she resist his commands, his desperate need is much harder to refuse.

This book is, of course, derived from "The Prisoner of Zenda," but this time the woman must pull off the masquerade.

I wish there was a bit more about how Penny manages to be Princess Sophia, but that is a minor complaint. Over all this is a very good book.

He swooped down on her on horseback: Nicholas, Sovereign Prince of Glarien, a man never to be denied. Though born to be an English earl, Fate gave him absolute power and the daring to try to fool all the crowned heads of Europe. His plan? To force Penny Lindsey to impersonate his missing bride at his state wedding in Regency London, leaving him one month to teach this not-so-simple country girl how to be a princess.

Cunning, charismatic, impossible to resist, Nicholas is never to be trusted, but as the clever masquerade unfolds, secret vulnerabilities are revealed. A wedding means a wedding night and passion cries out for fulfillment. Suddenly the stakes of the game are much higher than he ever intended...
