I love all of Christine Feehan's books and this one was just as good. Our hero was trapped and had been for such a long time with the bad guy. His heroine came along completely clueless and well I'll let you you read the book to see what happens from there. These books aren't for everyone though and can be read as standalone stories but if you want to get the most out of them then start at the beginning and read them all. If you like paranormal romance you will love this series.

As a stand-alone book, this was just OK. I get the impression Feehan has to produce another few books to fulfill a contract, and this is more of a interim setup for the final few that will wrap up the Dark series. It also seems that Feehan hopes some new readers have picked up this book at the airport, so she spends a lot of time retelling the Carpatheian back story - again. So the real plot occupies about 50% of the book, while she spends another 20% repeating stuff.

Basically, our hero, Dax, has spent the last 500+ years thwarting our villian's (Mithro, related to the no longer orphan Gregori Daratrazanoff) escape attempts from a dormant volcano, with the help of our heroine's, Riley, line of magic workers - descendents of Mithro's spurned lifemate, Arabejila. The volcano has changed both Dax and Mithro into something more than Carpathian and vampire since blood of any kind has been in short supply. And a possible hope for the infertile Carpathians is the reason Jubal and Gary are also on the scene. Lastly, We get to see Jasmine, Riordan, and Juliette again.

I gave this a 3 of 5 stars because it is average. In the end, the overall Dark Series story arc moves to the next phase (a trilogy back in the homeland). And I see a probable happy ending for the series - if Feehan decides to take that road. I jus hope Gary gets his well deserved happy ending with Gabriella soon.
