Memoir of a journalist from Wilmington, NC, who trained as a newspaper reporter and understood and appreciated history. He was a reporter and commentator for years on several TV news programs, and includes memories of FDR, JFK, the moon landing, and various political campaigns. Well-written, and often witty, this is one of my favorite sentences:

"In the summer after the primaries are finished, we cover both conventions--each combining the worst features of a cattle auction, a clearance sale of damaged merchandise and a sheriff's auction of recovered stolen goods, and above all a social event and fund-raiser by and for the rich."

A very enjoyable memoir by a witty, wise and very likable man. His story of the interview he and Chet Huntley did with the head of NASA leading up the the first moon shot was priceless.

As you read this and other memoirs by TV news personalities you quickly realize what great story tellers they are and how well they write about their experiences. This is a great books. I would also recommend Bob Shieffer's memoir.
