I am not a fan of Dickens, but this is one of the few that I almost managed to finish.

I was surprised at how much I loved listening to this on my commute to and from work. Even coming home from a long day, I still felt like I could sit in my car longer and hear more of the excellently acted BBC recording. Just by voices, there are characters you will come to love and those you will come to despise.
You know it's good when you care about the characters and you don't want it to end!

Still deserving its classic status.

We read this for a homeschool worldviews in literature class -- what a fantastic book. Dickens is a marvel for his characters. The plot is remarkable, and there are lots of themes to explore. It is on the inexorably long side -- that is the only downside of the book.

Persecuted by his wrathful stepfather, Mr. Murdstone; deceived by his boyhood idol, the callous, charming Steerforth; driven into moral combat with the sniveling clerk Uriah Heep, and hurled, pell-mell, into a blizzard of infatuation with the adorably dim-witted Dora--he survives it all with inimitable style. The things that battle him lead to greater self-awareness, and trial by trial, his unbridled young heart grows every more disciplined and true.

I loved this story - one of my favorites to date for 2006. Excellent descriptions and unforgettable characters abound.

The enchanting story of a gentle orphan growing up in the indifferent adult world.
Persecuted by his wrathful stepfather; Decieved by his boyhood idol; hurled into an infatuation with a lovable, but dim-witted girl; he survives the worst, and best.
At last he grows into a disciplined and true man.

The story of David Copperfield is supposedly the closest to an autobiography that Dickens ever wrote. It remains my 2nd favourite after Great Expectations.

A hearty piece of literature.

Though one of Dickens' more flowery and descriptive works, the depth of characterization is well worth it for the persistent reader. The story really picks up about half way through and is the beautifully written history of its main character, David Copperfield.

I really liked this book. I was supposed to read this in high school but rejected it as too boring. A few (great many) years later comes maturity and what do you know, a great novel to spend time with.

David Copperfield (Dover Thrift Editions) is a children's version, not the original manuscript.

If you haven't read this - do your self a favor and get a cup of tea - for a few nights - and put yourself back in time and enjoy what Charles Dickens wrote and his favorite character... David Copperfield.
