R.F. Delderfield was one of the great writers of fiction of the 20th century.

If you like to read books that are a saga spanning decades, then you need to check out this author and his books.

"Give us This Day" is the third book in a trilogy(called The Swann Saga) about a British soldier serving in India during the middle of the 19th Century. After an injury in battle and a lucky find, Adam Swann returns to England and starts his own business, a transport company.

The opening scene is Adam Swann's 70th birthday...during the same year that Queen Victoria celebrates the Jubliee of her reign...the business has prospered, his sons now run the modernized firm and horse transport is rapidly being replaced with motorized vehicles.

Delderfield was very adept at developing his characters...these are real people, with real problems and real triumphs.

This volume could be read alone but you will miss a great deal....if you have not already read the first two volumes in this trilogy...do so.

I recommend this author strongly....I have read and re-read all of his books and they still do not disappoint.
