I was unsure of what to expect when I saw the cover of this book. With a title like My Dead Boyfriend, it really could have gone in many directions. As I started the story, I began to get worried that it was going to follow the currently running equation: paranormal beings + an annoying loved-crazed girl. Wrong. Allison Mack is understandably grieving three months after her boyfriend, Mark, died in a car wreck. On her 16th birthday, he returns from the dead with a cryptic warning. Marks reappearance is the first in a series of events that leads Ally to discover a new past and a very different future. Strong, witty, and more than a little hardheaded, Ally focuses on saving her family from bad fairies.

Cool characters + action + Irish legends = 5 stars. No graphic violence - no foul language - no lusty sexual overtones = 0 deductions. Why 3 stars? No, its not new math. Its the writing. It seemed whats the right word? Uneven? It was like taking the freeway to Disneyland in rush hour traffic. Some parts went really slow and other went really fast. The destination is definitely worth it, but the ride could have been better. Know what I mean? I think that with some better traffic management (i.e. editting and more development) this story could be 4 or 5 stars.

The series seems exciting and full of promise. I am ready for the ride. I just hope the next trip will be longer and smoother.

■ Fantasy and paranormal readers
■ YA readers, maybe down to middle school (its pretty clean)
