The recent flooding in Oregon and Washington ruined many school libraries, and the greatest bookstore in the NW, Powell's City of Books, is collecting new and used  books to help out these poor schools!

I have a few credits in my account, and I was wondering if anyone would be willing to do a great deal on children's or YA books- fiction or non-fiction, classics or contemporary, picture books, chapter books, anything will help!

Rachel,

As a school librarian, I applaud your effort! I have over-ordered on some new hardbound books about different countries. The two series are "Festivals of the World" and "Welcome to my Country," and they are age-appropriate for 2nd - 6th grade. These are currently listed on amazon.com at around $26 each, but I bought them for much less, just so I could pass them on.

Here are the countries that are represented:

  • Canada,
  • China,
  • Haiti,
  • Indonesia,
  • Israel,
  • Mongolia,
  • New Zealand (Festivals of the World);
  • Cambodia,
  • Israel,
  • Portugal,
  • Thailand (Welcome to my Country).

Could you do this for 3 credits, and I'll throw in some extra paperbacks as well?

Blessings in the upcoming new year,

Liz F.

Rachel, it is really great that you are giving back to your community in their time of need. Look at my list and I'll send you whatever books you want. No charge. Just send me a PM of your choices and I'll box them up and send them.

I know I don't have very many YA books, but if there is anything you think they could find a use for, how about 5 for 1 no restrictions?

Rachel, why don't you post the address for Powell's City of Books so we can send some off?  The NW is more than welcome to all my children's books.  I'll take them off my bookshelf right now.  Just waiting for an address:)

I don't know if the whole Powell's chain is doing this or just the branch near me, I will check into that. There's nothing on their web site that I can find, so I think it might just be the one over here.

I've received books from 6 people already, and my collection box is filling up!  I'm probably going to Powell's tomorrow to drop them off, but I know there are still more coming, thank you all so much!!!

Thank you for the info Eve!  I didn't see anything on their website, and the people at the Beaverton branch didn't know if the other branches were collecting as well. The one time I went to Portland I didn't see any collection boxes and they were swamped so I didn't ask at the desk.

I don't think I have anything that would be considered YA on my list, but you can check it out and if there is something that would be helpful, let me know.  I'll get it sent right out to either your or Powell's.

Eve - I boxed up my YA books today and will mail out this week.

ALL - bumping... if anyone cares to donated books for public school libraries that have been flooded, Eve's posted the address.  Powell's is collecting on behalf of the libraries:

Powell's.com

2720 N.W. 29th Ave

Portland OR 97210

Attn: Sally

Include a note on the address label saying it's a donation from a PBS RAOK'er for the school flooded libraries!

Does anyone know if there is a cutoff date for this?  I haven't gotten my box packed--I hope to have time this weekend. But I don't want it to show up after they are done collecting, and it's going to have to go media mail.
