This is a very enjoyable historical cozy set in the small village of Kurland St. Mary. It takes place in 1806, just after the battle of Waterloo. I really enjoyed both of our main characters: Major Robert Kurland "lord of the manor" who is recovering from injuries received at Waterloo, and Lucy Harrington, eldest daughter of the village rector. There are two mysteries, one involving two missing servants, and the second has to do with a series of thefts from the village. What made this story shine for me was the character of Lucy, who articulates her concerns about her future, since she has been duty-bound to be the woman in charge of the rector's home and large family since the death of her mother some six or seven years previous. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

Key characters are Major Robert Kurland, who resides in a small village and was injured in the battle of Waterloo when his horse fell on him, and Lucy Harrington, oldest daughter of the widowed rector. Broken legs keep him bedridden. angry, and in extreme pain. Lucy, to help him recover, often visits.

The story begins when he sees a dim figure with a burden from his bedroom window. The sinister vision is out of place so he shares it with Lucy. Small items disappear from several homes and two servant women vanish. Are the events linked? No one locks doors.

Set in the Regency era, this cozy mystery is an easy read with a competent and independent heroine and a strong arrogant hero cared for by a former military comrade and his valet. Always physically and mentally active, he resents his immobility. She is restrained by her controlling father who favors her younger more attractive sister. Determining what is going on in the village serves as a dangerous diversion for the them. Yet as they discover more and more a dangerous killer may choose one or both as victims.
