I really enjoy this series. Book one was good, but I think that this one, Death Without Company, was even better. The storyline and character development brought the characters into a realism that had you wondering if you really did know these people.
Walt Longmire's decisions are never easy, but when Mari Borja is found dead at the same Assisted Living Facility as Lucian Connally, the retired sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt is throwing into the middle of a twisted story that has his scratching his head and wondering just who isn't tell the whole truth.
Walt's department of misfits and new recruits has him questioning how the Crow, the Cheyenne, the Basques, millions of dollars in methane gas and an abusive drunk named Charlie Nurburn all come together and have their individual parts in the death of Mari. Add in his deputy Vic who is the most brazen character in this book, and Henry Standing Bear and his rather interesting use of non-politically correct English and you have both an excellent mystery and an entertaining insight into Durant, Wyoming.
I space these books out in fear that I will run out of the adventures of Walt Longmire. Highly entertaining and definitely a book that you have to pay close attention to or you might just miss the little clues along the way.

Mari Baroja, a Basque woman, is found poisoned at the Durant Home for Assisted Living, The further Sheriff Longmire searches, why Mari Baroja is dead weaves further into the mists of time. Having already read the first book, I was delighted to see that Walt's best friend, Henry Standing Bear, returned. There are various returning people important to the good Sheriff: deputy Lucy Moretti and the previous sheriff, Lucian Connally. The way Craig Johnson writes them, these characters step off the page.

Book 2 in the Longmire series. Craig Johnson is one of my favorite authors. Great characters, plots, and a writer who knows how to make you want to keep turning the page. Added to that is always a bit of warmth and humor, besides intriguing mystery.

5 Stars for the whole series. Longmire on Netflix is based on this book series, but the books are a bit different with some of the characters, etc. A great read.

I've watched this series on T.V.; and read the books as well, they are both enjoyable. You can't go wrong with either.

#2 in the Walt Longmire series. I'm really enjoying this series and admire the way this author can tell a story. I love the western locale and the cast of characters feel like old friends. I look forward to continuing with this series.
Second in the Longmire series and another great read. Sheriff Longmire is called by his friend, retired sheriff Lucien who now lives in a care facility and insists to Longmire that another resident, Mari Baroja, has been poisoned. Lucien then reveals he was married to Mari for about 3 hours 50 years ago, until her parents caught up with them and annulled the marriage. Sure enough, an autopsy finds that Mari was murdered. Lucien's secret isn't the only one that will come out as Mari's tragic past is slowly brought to light. It's a story about the awful things that people can do, told with sympathy and even humor by Johnson. Longmire gets saved a couple times by Henry Standing Bear. All the characters are solid, the scenery and weather are really brought to life by Johnson's great descriptions.
I'm going to mention the TV series based on these books just once more - while I liked it a lot, the books are far and away better IMHO. The characters are barely the same. And while all the TV actors did a fantastic job in their roles, only Lou Diamond Phillips as Henry's voice has stayed with me into the books.

The Longmire series is turning into my new favorite. I will admit, I got interested in the books after I started to watch the TV series. Both are good. I am looking forward to the next book.
I really like his books, and find them much better than the TV series.

I read the first book in this series and thought the mystery interesting. When I started reading this second book, I got about 30 pages into it and decided my time was better spent reading something else. So I never finished this book.
For whatever reason, the writing style disappointed me as it seemed overly involved and depressing. Plus, I wasn't interested in learning more about a female deputy sheriff who couldn't utter a sentence without using profanity.

A complicated story that was a bit hard to follow. I like the characters as I can visualize them from the series. Too many names to keep track of to understand the story, but it ends OK. Murders, name changes, wills with lots of methane gas money.

Another solid entry in the Walt Longmire series from Johnson. This is the second in the series and the third that I have read...I have several more on my shelf that I need to get to sometime soon! In this one, Walt investigates the death of an older Basque woman named Mari Baroja who former sheriff Lucian Connally claims was murdered. Connally was married briefly (for 3 hours) to Mari and insists that her death was not by natural causes. Longmire is not totally convinced but agrees to an autopsy that does end up showing that Mari was poisoned. The subsequent investigation involves connecting events from over 50 years ago to why someone would want to kill Mari.
This was a very good story that doesn't get rushed and keeps you wanting to find out the motive behind the murder. Along for the ride are Walt's friend Henry Standing Bear, deputy Vic Moretti, and the new deputy Santiago (Sancho) Saizarbitoria. Another deputy and interesting character is hired towards the end of the novel nicknamed "Double Tough." The novel also has its moments of humor especially with Walt's dry wit. For example Walt's thoughts on thinking he recognizes someone in a photo: "I studied the ornament and stared at the partial face, knowing that I had seen the man, knowing that he and Leo were in cahoots, cahoots being a legal term in Wyoming, see cahooting in the first degree, intent to cahoot, and so on." I first read a Longmire novel because I am a big fan of the TV series (I just saw that Netflix is doing another season!) but the novels really delve more deeply into the characters and the setting that is Wyoming. High overall recommendation!

Author Craig Johnson...writer of COLD DISH,Keeps this series an enjoyable and easy to read one..I'm looking forward to reading all the Walt Longmire books. If you like Hillerman..CJ Box or Wm Kent Krueger..give Craig Johnson a try.
