Everyone in Lochdubh loves Mrs. Gentle except Hamish MacBeth. He can't put his finger on the reason why except he thinks she is too good to be true. He makes his obligatory visit on his newest resident (unannounced) and hears her berating her daughter. This daughter is an adult by the way. Mrs. Gentle invites Hamish for tea and they are served by a Turkish maid whom Mrs. Gentle ignores mostly except to order her around. Ayesha, the maid, needs an extension on her visa or she will be forced to return to Turkey and marry a horrible man. Hamish feels sorry for her and to solve his dilemma of the police captain from selling his station, he asks her to marry him. Mrs. Gentle announces she will give Ayesha 10,000 pounds plus provide a large reception, etc., only Ayesha disappears. Then Mrs. Gentle disappears! Hamish must solve two murders then and discovers no one is who they purport to be. The book is full of twists and turns and a thoroughly good read.
