This book is a little slow to get into, but once I read on it was well worth the time spent reading it. Whether or not Camargue's daughter is who she says she is is unknown until nearly the end, but the hunt to find out takes Inspector Wexford from England to the coast of California. I was amused at some of the expressions that Wexford used that I have never heard of before. Luckily I have friends over there who translated for me. I find Ruth Rendell's mysteries generally very enjoying.

From the book cover: "Sir Manuel Camargue, yesterday one of the most celebrated musicians of his time, today floats in the lake near his sprawling English country house. The consensus is "tragic accident." Inspector Wexford, that most human and dogged of sleuths, knows foul play when he smells it." An excellent read, with an interesting twist.
