I received an order for a book this morning with this RC.  'I would prefer not to receive "ex libris" books unless they are in good condition.'     I denied it stating that I did not know what "ex libris" means, so I don't think it would meet her standards.  Seriously, huh?  It's to bad; the book is brand new, I started it and couldn't get into it.  And I don't even know why I had to refuse it.

Ex Libris is a Latin phrase, meaning literally, "from books." It is often used to indicate ownership of a book, as in from the books of... or from the library of'...'.

Ex Libris may also refer to:

  • A bookplate, which is also sometimes known as an ex libris

ETA:Sorry, that is from Wikipedia

I think she meant ex Library books. Maybe she typed to fast and didn't read her condition before she set them.

I would take that to mean that she doesn't want former library books. Shame she didn't just say it in English, since it is not as clear as it should be what she was not wanting. Oh well, don't worry, you will get another request for your book since it is clear you are at #1 on the FIFO list.

I thought library books were a no-no here.  I have one a never posted because it came from a library which was dissappointing because I ordered it used from B&N.

Ex-library books are postable...

Per the Help Center:

Yes, decirculated library books may be swapped at PBS.

  • Ex-library books often have stamps inside or on the binding: this is fine.

If you receive an ex-library book that is not clearly marked "withdrawn" (not all libraries do this), you should contact the library to ask them if this book is still part of their collection.

  • If the book is still part of the library's active collection, you should contact us.

If you do not wish to receive ex-library books, you should put this into your Requestor Conditions in your Account Settings.

As long as the ex-library book is in good enough condition to post, you certainly can post it.

I post ex-library books all the time.  I really like them from the standpoint that they have plastic covers over the dust jackets, which protects them.  Pat

Yes, you could have posted it to her, but you have every right not to - some people deny any and all RCs without even reading them. I did know that ex-libris meant ex-library (some people just can't deal with all the stickers and plastic covers libraries splatter all over their books). Too bad for her- sounds like she missed out on a winner! I never mind library books, and they are absolutely postable here! Post some more, maybe they will hit my WL ha ha ha!

Ex library is ok as long as it meets the posting guidelines. If someone doesn't want ex-library book then they have to put an RC asking not to receive those.  You can't miss an RC.  You have to agree to it before you can accept the request.

wow.   in 0.16 seconds you can get 57,000 google results from "define: ex libris"

Which, btw, actually means the book plate in the front of the book (in other words, the decorative sticker that says "from the library of ____ "  but has come to mean "from any library".

The person with the RC needs to rephrase her conditions, because the next person may take it to mean she doesn't want books with book plates, and send her an ex-library copy.
