As an active lawyer and legistlator, McGlashan developed the skills necessary to defend his opinion on the position of the Breen cabin near Donner Lake to the Native Sons of the American West. As a newspaper editor, he wrote fiery investigations into questions such as the massacre of an emigrant party in Utah that had gone unexplained for over twenty years.
In 1878 McGlashan began his most famous work, The History of the Donner Party, which was the first book to accurately and compassionately tell the story of the Donner Party's winter ordeal.« less
