Hi, this is my first time to post on this board and I am really hoping someone can help me. The book I am looking for was published before 1995. I can't remember the name or the author's name, I just remember some sketchy plot details. The heroine is Charlotte (or something else that can shorten to Char or Charl), she is the daughter of a wealthy man. I can't remember what he does (plantation, furniture?) but I am pretty sure they live in the Carolinas. Her dad introduces her to the love interest (can't remember his name). Her dad dies (maybe because of political violence though I am not sure). The love interest is a spy or she thinks he is a spy. She goes to Canada for a while, is forced to marry an Indian, and then in the end is in New Orleans during (I think) the Battle of 1812.

That's all I remember. Any help would be greatly appreciated! If you don't know the answer, any other site you can direct me to for help would also be appreciated. I've posted this also on Goodreads, Yahoo Answers and Askville, and I have been scrolling through books on PBS and Amazon.  If you know something similar, even if it doesn't entirely match these details, please let me know. I read a lot so it's possible I've mixed it up with something else. Please help, I loved this book and really want to re-read it!

Not sure about these.

Charlotte by Amanda Hart Douglass

Lovely young Charlotte Bourne was the apple of her father's eyes and a belle of New York society. The onset of the War Between the States introduced her to young Liam Brady, whom her dissolute brother Richard had hired to serve as his substitute in the Union Army. Liam and Charlotte fall deeply in love, but before they could marry, Charlotte had to come to terms with her turbulent feelings for the two other men in her life. The raging Civil War echoed the conflict in Charlotte's heart...

Embers of Dawn by Patricia Matthews

In a violent age of war and turmoil, she rose from the ashes of battle to seize a wild and passionate dream.

In the fiery aftermath of Civil War, she was penniless. She possessed only a ravaged farm and a cache of prized tobacco. Everything was gone but the determined spirit that drove her on. Two men would kindle her dreams, ignite her ambitions, set her aflame. Ben Asher gave her wisdom and tender love. Clint Devlin introduced her to passion and swept her into a stormy romance. Torn between two men, pitted against sworn enemies, Charlotte battled to prevail, to find rapture and wealth beyond compare, to see her beloved South reborn.

Thanks Amber for your help, unfortunately it is definitely neither of those two books.  I am sure that the book I am looking for has the heroine going to Canada, living with an Indian husband for a while, and ending up in New Orleans.  I appreciate your input - for all the sites I've posted this on, you're only the second person to try to guess something!  Actually those books you mentioned sound interesting, so I might check them out even though they are not the one I'm looking for this time.  Thanks again!!

I'm still looking through my list that I have with heroine's with names that start with Charl. It's going to take me awhile, but hopefully I run across the book your looking for.

Maybe this book?

Love, Honor and Betray by Elizabeth Kary (War of 1812)

Emerald-eyed Charl Beckwith was too proud for love until she met the mysterious Seth Porterfield, a duke's bastard son, sent by England to betray the new America she loved ...

As war raged around them, passion was their battlefield ... As fate wrenched them apart, desire was their destiny... And as she followed Seth into the forests of a new continent, and into her heart's own wilderness, Charl was to learn the towering, tempestuous truth of love ...
