I couldn't get into this book because I found myself wanting to kill all of the characters myself.

I did not like the criminals, but I did not like the protagonist Oklahoma State Trooper (our hero) either. I'm supposed to really hate the bad guys and love the good guys. It just did not work for me.

From the back cover:

They busted out of McAlester Stae Penitentiary - three escaped convicts going to ground in a world unprepared for anything like them...
LAMAR PYE is prince of the Dirty White Boys. With a lion in his soul, he roars - for he is the meanest, deadliest animal on the loose...
ODELL is Larmar's cousin, a hulking manchild. With blank, unfeeling eyes. He live for daddy Lamar. Surely he will die for him...
RICHARD's survival hangs on a sketch: a crude drawing of a lion and a half-naked woman. For this Lamar has let Richard live...

I like this author a lot. Some of his books contain the same characters, some have relatives of characters in other books, etc.

Very harsh language, and it was vivid in decriptive manner of what the men did.

DIRTY WHITE BOYS By Stephen Hunter, Read By Will Patton, 1994, Abridged, approximately three hours, ISBN 1-57042-192-7. 3 psychopaths stage a daring break from a maximum and security prison. Their freedom results an unprecedented killing spree that soaks Oklahoma in blood. Bud Pewtie, a tough school headed veteran detective sets off on their trail. When the three killers threaten the lives of his teenage son and the woman loves, Bud's determination to track them becomes personal. The suspenseful climax is intense and powerful.

I enjoyed this book, the characters are well defined. The bad guys are evil but cunning and the good guys have flaws. Good dialog, fast paced story. One of Steven Hunters best.

Good Read. Its the prequel to Sniper. Gives family background. Very graphic however.
