I've been out of work since August and since the job market in Michigan stinks, I've started trying to sell my jewelry online.  Now my husband, a former GM engineer, is unemployed too.  Since they termed him end of the month on 10/31 health insurance ended that day.  I need it since I had a stroke a couple of years ago and take lots of meds.  We are eligible for COBRA, but its $700/month for the 2 of us =(  Life sucks.

So sorry for you & the DH, Claudia.  BIG hugs to both of you.  I'll keep my fingers crossed (even when I'm reading) that everything works out.

Claudia - We'll keep you both in our prayers.  Do you qualify for Medicaid because of the stroke?  Depending on where you have gotten your health care, they may be able to help you apply.  My daughter is a stroke-survivor so I know how rough it can be.

Claudia I am sorry to hear about the layoffs and the insurance costs.  That is horrible! I thought what we paid was bad. I hope your state offers some insurance.

Hugs Claudia!  I went through this about a year ago and was laid off for 9 months.  Saying big prayers you both find something soon.

Oh Claudia, how scary for you.  I hope it will all work out okay and quickly.  My husband was laid off around a year and a half ago, and it resulted in his finding his dream job, so I hope this will turn out to be an opportunity instead of a nightmare. But of course this economy is not a promising one.  And cobra is such a joke, I don't think anyone can ever afford it.

Hope things take a turn for the better real soon, Claudia.  Yeah, cobra is a joke because you have to pay the full premium usually to keep it, not the discount the boss gets.  Check around for a good local independent insurance agent (independent and not one associated only with  a certain company or a few, often they can help you more,  and also ask about Golden Rule, which is a plan for individuals.  Friends of mine in the same situation made out better with that when her husband lost his job several years ago.  Also check your state's website to see what may be available; here in CT we had a sort of HMO, Connecticare which now lets individuals apply.  And, don't know how old you are but AARP (55+) recently starting offering a plan for individuals.  Not sure but the AARP and Golden Rule might possibly be easier to qualify for with your problems.  Good luck with that.

Oh Claudia,  that is terrible.   I have been laid off twice in my life and each time was lucky enough to have new doors open.  May you and DH have similar luck.  I will be thinking about you.

Hi Claudia...you're right...life sucks. Have you looked into disability insurance? Here in Maine I know you can get it if you're even temporarily disabled. I know a man that is receiving it because he needed surgery and is an alcoholic. It's worth a shot to do a little research.  Best of luck.

Sending {{HUGS}}. DH and I were laid off within 6 months of each other so I know what you are going through. Hoping that everything works out.

Thanks for all the hugs & good wishes Ladies.  Sure wish after all the work on my jewelry--design, construction & photography--that I could sell some.  That would cheer me up a bit. DH keeps insisting that all my jewelry is a wasted effort and money since he doesn't think I'll ever sell ANY.  I so want to prove him wrong!

This is the second time I've been unemployed in 2 years.  Hubby has never been unemployed before in 20 years.   He's devastated, unfortunately.  The company treated him like shit after working there for 12 years and being promoted 3 times.  He gets nothing--no severance or even the vacation pay he's owed.  Only unemployment, which doesn't even cover our mortgage and health insurance together =(

Since I am still able to work, the stroke was not severe enough to qualify me for Medicaid (or Medicare) as the case may be.

some drug companies will give free or discounted prescriptions too.. a friend of mne applied for this...hers required the dr's signature but the medicine itself would have cost her hundreds permonth and she can't afford that.
