Incorporating her father's common sense and folk wisdom, a biography by a New Jersey doctor tells how her parents, who held down multiple jobs and transmitted strong values to their six daughters, inspired them to reach success.

This is a remarkable story; one of the best. A black man who is a ditchdigger and his wife, first a mama then a maid, have 5 daughters. Dad borrows the money for the supplies to build a house after purchasing the property in an excellent white school distinct. His daughters study all the time, no dates, and all learn to play musical instruments. He tells them that black women are Mamas, Mammies and maids. But you will all be doctors because if you can heal people they will not care that sex or race you are. While his daughters are in high school they adopt a sixth daughter, a teenager. He says do you think since we got you late, you could at least be a nurse.Yes, the girl says. I admire this couple and their daughters immensely. This is a great book, that I would recommend to everyone.

this true story of a black family living in NJ is about how the author's father dreamed of all six of his daughters to bacome doctors. this really good book transcends race.the book is difficult at times because of some of the tactics her parents take but inthe end this is a wonderful book.
if you live in NJ,particularly the Jersey shore around Long Branch,NJ you will recogninize many of the places in this book.

Amazing story of the Thornton sisters. How their father helped them achieve their dreams thru his sacrifices. From very early ages starting in the early 50's these young girls, eventually totaling 6 sisters, formed the group called the "The Thornton Sisters". In the beginning they were featured on the Ted Mack & the Original Amateur Hour & played at the Apollo Theatre. There fame grew from the rock N' roll 50's era thru the 70's before they started their life careers in college. Of course I had to get on the putter and listen to them again and bring back some old memories after I finished the book.
