This is a true story of a run away slave who joins the Union Army during the Civil War and the stray dog that he nursed back to health. The dog fought along side the soldier and even served as POW along side his owner.
Wonderful read aloud story for people of all ages.
Wonderful read aloud story for people of all ages.
The book is based on the story of a dog that actually was a mascot for a Pennsylvania unit in the Civil War. Jack was captured and even traded for a prisoner of war. It shows the importance of mascots and how they improved morale in the units. Florence Biros has added a story around Jack that covers many issues during the Civil War. It is a good book and enjoyed the movie as well. There are adult themes in Dog Jack making it better to read and discuss.

A wonderful American Civil War novel based firmly on historical fact. We all need a dog like Jack.
