A celebration of Newfoundland, which did not join the Commonwealth until 1949. It is a well made book, my copy being from the fourth printing. These are short pieces of prose, along with some photos and poetry.
"Newfoundland has undergone such a change in the space of a few years that we often lose sight of what life was like in former times. Even the stories of our parents seem to have taken place longer ago than they actually have. But it is dangerous to forget the past. And in our case, because we have one of the most interesting and colourful histories in North America, it would also be a great shame. It would mean losing exciting stories of duels, of giant sea demons, of a tidal wave, of heroes to match those of any age. It would be a great loss to our pride as Newfoundlanders. It is hoped also that this book will serve as a stimulus to you to tell, through writing and art, of your own experiences, and to seek out and record the stories told in the particular part of the province in which you live. Because it is only then, when we understand where we have come from and what our present way of life is like, that we can think wisely about what we want our futures to be."

I deducted one star from my evaluation because there is no index.
