Down to Earth Author:Et Al Ross Down To Earth: Canadian Potters at Work is a pictorial celebration of Canadian potters and their art. In it, some of Canada's most accomplished ceramic artists express in their own words their thoughts and feelings about the art, craft and business of pottery. They speak about how they came to be potters, how the English, European and Oriental t... more »raditions have influenced them, how the landscapes surrounding them have affected their work, and how they have survived financially in an often precarious profession.
The artists included work in cities and villages from Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia to Horby Island, British Columbia. Their backgrounds are as diverse as their approaches to their art; their techniques offer almost infinite variety. Each in some way combines earth and water, fire and air to produce objects that are sometimes simply decorative, sometimes functional, but always beatiful to see. They produce pots and tableware, tiles and murals, ceramic sculpture and porcelain figurines. But while the artists differ in so many respects, they share both a love of working with clay and an artistic sensibility. And through the subtle interplay of imagination, tradition and technological expertise, they make uniquie contributions to Canadian culture.« less
