This is a must read for fantasy lovers.
The story and plots are based of the adventures of two main characters, but the fact that there are four different worlds to travel to makes it an open page for creativity and character depth and some fun. It's always nice when authors take an idea, create a new world and make it believable. Weis and Hickman are master at it!
This is by far one of my favorite series....I'm on book four of seven...so far so good, though I will say book two was my least favorite and I almost gave up reading the series- but it gets better...and three, and now four, are page turners.
There is tons of action, mystery and plot...(also a little romance, but not till book four. ^_^)
PLEASE enjoy, but you won't be getting MY copies!! ; )

I have read a lot of stuff by Weis/Hickman through the years but this series has long stood out in my mind as a favorite. I began this one when it was newly published back in about 1991 and read all seven in the series. The action is great, the characters are likeable and progress and grow throughout. All together a great series well worth the time. P.S. I only wondered all the way through what the heck Haplo's dog was actually going to turn out to be... You'll have to find out for yourself. Enjoy

In the first novel of the Deathgate Cycle, the assassin Haplo has been hired to kill a royal child on the world of Arianus. He finds a world with porous rock islands floating on gas lighter than air occupied by elves, humans and dwarves. Transportation for elves is by airship while humans ride dragons. Reader understanding of this world is enhanced by the author's inclusion of maps and diagrams.

Elves, humans and dwarves live with dwarves occupying the lower level as slaves to the elves serving the Kicksey-winsey. There are plots and more plots by humans who are sorcerers, elves, and elves who are pirates as well as dwarves plotting to overthrow Elven rule. Haplo finds himself allied with the child he was hired to murder by the king himself to resist and unsnare the plots and hopefully save the world

This book is so full of fascinating characters that it's hard to put down. From Patryn, Haplo,to Xar, and Zifnab, readers find the characters remarkable and rememberable. One reader states that "When you've grown used to Alfred, the reader can feel like other characters' when he faints in the face of danger. The dwarf couple, Jarre and Limbeck, are driven to upend Elven control. And, Dog is endearing, to Haplo and reader alike. Bane, is a self-serving child. And, not to be forgotten is Hugh the Hand.

I thoroughly enjoyed this well written adventure. Hugh, Haplo, Alfred, Bane...all very well thought out characters in a well written plot. I look forward to reading the remainder of the series.

Started slow and quickly picked up the pace. This is the first book in the series, and nothing is concluded at the end.
