I read a lot of sci-fi/fantasy novels and I'd heard a lot about Anne McCaffrey. When I finally read this trilogy, I was kind of disappointed. Perhaps my expectations were just too high, but I didn't find much extraordinary about this work, though it had some interesting plotting.
If you know someone who has NEVER read any fantasy, this is the volume to start them out---and get them hooked! This large volume has the first 3 novels about Pern, settled by humans some time in the future. Pern is a lovely, agrarian planet---except for one tiny little problem. Periodically, some space-bourne debris falls on the world, and eats everything it lands on! Oops, not enough research before they landed, right? But the people are on the new world to stay now, and they have to make the best of the situation. The ways in which they work around the difficulties make a fine saga.
From back cover: Finally together in one volume, the first three books in the world's most beloved science fiction series, THE DRAGONRIDERS OF PERN, by Anne McCaffrey, one of the great science fiction writers of all time: DRAGONFLIGHT, DRAGONQUEST, THE WHITE DRAGON. Those who know these extraordinary tales will be able to re-visit with Lessa, F'lar, Ruth, Lord Jaxon, and all the others. And for those just discovering this magical place, there are incomparable tales of danger, deceit, and daring, just waiting to be explored..
I've been reading this series since I was 11 years-old. Since my 15 year-old copy of these books was literally falling apart from being read so often, I was thrilled to see the trilogy copy available through paperback swap. I love these books, and would recommend them to anyone asking.
This omnibus compiles the first 3 stories of McCaffrey's sweeping Pern series: Dragonflight, Dragonquest and The White Dragon. Each is an excellent story in its own respect and together they make for a great introduction or refresher to the world of Pern.
This series is the best of Anne McCaffrey's works!! Dragonflight is about Lessa of Ruatha and how she becomes Queen Rider, bonded to Ramoth. Dragonquest is about when the Old-timers try to kill F'lar because of his role as the Benden's Weyrleader and his understanding of the modern holds and their lords. The White Dragon is about the Ruathan Lord Holder candidate, Jaxom, and how he impresses the only white dragon, Ruth. If you like dragons, this is the best out there!!
