This is the second book of a series -- The Entitled Gentlemen, by Caroline Warfield. Phillip Tavernash, Ninth Duke of Glenmoor, realizes that he is not really the duke and decides to try life in North America. Not far into the Missouri River, he's mugged, robbed, and left for dead. The Archer family comes to his aid and tends him while he heals.
While on the mend, Phillip learns that a pair of brothers have been stealing and killing in the area. They were also the men who abducted Phillip. When the Archers try to help Phillip bring the Sullivan brothers to the law, they attack Archer's Roost, Nan Archer's tavern and inn, burning it to the ground.
Now, Phillip and the Archers are looking for justice. Phillip is also looking around for a way to make a life for himself (and Nan) that does not require him to return to England.
