Mr. Pottle runs the old dump outside of town. He fixes things up and calls them treasures. But the best treasures are the books. He makes a library for them and keeps them at the dump. Soon there are too many books, so he gives them away to nursing homes and apartments. One day, Mr. Pottle doesn't appear. The children ride their bikes all over town to find him in a ditch with a bad ankle.

Mr. Pottle has a lot of visitors after the hospital sends him home. The adults bring food, but the children bring books. When he doesn't pick one, the children ask why. Mr. Pottle tells them he doesn't know how to read. So the children read to him.

Why I recommend it: This story would be a good way to tell children that their old things can be treasure to someone else. Also, to explain illiteracy.
