Butcher never ceases to amaze me. Her books are not solely written around a main couple. We get updated on other characters, new ones appear, and we get more pieces to the puzzle that Butcher is putting together. I love that, it's never boring, its not about just one couple at a time, its about this series as a whole, with each couple just being another piece to snap into place. So many things are developing, and Jackie has thrown everything they have known into a tale spin. She is so different from the other Theronai women, she can tap into powers beyond any one's guess. Ian was always a mesmerising character, his willpower and restraint to stay in control to save his brothers was what drove his will to live. But Jackie shakes up his world and drags him back from the ledge. There is just so much going on in this one, I can't possible explain it all. But if you haven't read this series, you have to start at the beginning or you will be totally lost. It is a well written, very woven series that keeps me spellbound and impatiently waiting for the next installment.

I haven't read Logan and Hope's story so I'm missing some things when I started this one. But as long as you have read the one before that one with the big showdown scene (the one where you find out why all the men are sterile and all that), you will be okay.
In the beginning it was rather annoying because Jackie was dumb as a rock. What part of if you try to return to your old life, demons will seek you out and eat you alive did Jackie not understand? I can understand her feelings but it was rehashed so many times I wanted to slap her. She does redeem herself in the book so keep reading. Jackie kind of grows on you, especially her loyalty to Iain.
Part of what I don't like about Butcher is that she fails to show a bond between the women who were supposed to be close. You would think Helen and the other women who have been where Jackie was at would spend more time with her, instead of acting brainwashed. Or that after Nika has been right so many times, they would stop treating her like she was crazy (By the way, she has become my favorite character in the series). Butcher does a good job with bonding when it comes to couples but it would be so nice if the women were more united.
Iain was nice, typical alpha male. He kept me reading when I was getting frustrated with Jackie.
Overall, it was an okay book. Much better towards the end than the beginning. I think I would have been slightly disappointed if I spent real money on it but as a credit or borrowed from the library, it wasnt bad.
