There was an earlier question about whether Media Mail was being discontinued in 2009.  I asked my postal worker today and she said she hadn't heard anything.  However, she also said that didn't mean anything.

She further told me that they're losing money on media mail - they only make about 10 cents on it and with the rising cost of fuel, it's not cost effective.

I then asked if they did discontinue it, what would be the alternative and she said First Class or Parcel Post.  I asked her to give me the difference between Media Mail and Parcel Post on what she was then weighing for me - and the difference was $2.00 (round figure) for Media Mail and $6.00 (round figure) for Parcel Post.  Quite a difference!!!!!

She said the best thing to do is to write our congress persons and let them know our feelings.  They're the only ones who would have any sway with the Postal Executive Board.

I havent heard that and I work for the PO. Bound Printed Matter rate was recently discontinued at the retail level. You can still mail that way if you have a bulk mail permit. The difference between BPM and MM is that you could send advertising in BPM.

I'm not saying it wont happen, concidering the amount of abuse we see in this class of mail.

Wow! I hope media mail isn't discontinued.  I doubt I could afford to pay that much to mail a book.  I live out in the boonies, hence no library close by.

I hope it isn't too - that would totally shut down my PBS swapping, as well as my half.com sales

Well, if they do discontinue media mail. I will then consider donating these books somewhere. Which I had originally planned. And still may for some, I have so many. So check it out, before I start nit picking the books. Jeanne
