Young and full of plans for herself, it is only natural that her sympathies go out to boys like Flip who already at sixteen have doubtful futures. How does it feel to be a drop-out, beaten at will by a drunken father, to know full well that the police watch and wait? How could boys like Flip be frank about what they know? Beth, appalled at first, gets understanding from the young group leader. She all the more regrets being the one to uncover it was Flip who hid the lemme stick- the lemme stick holding stolen diamonds. Southway has the trust of the community, and things are worked out. The next term Beth looks forward to returning there. She feels a lift when tough boys help "Teach" with her bags. She has been accepted.« less
