A nice start to, hopefully, a good naval fiction series in which a young New England merchant mariner turns into a U.S. Naval officer during the last two years of the Civil War. Confronting southern foes afloat and ashore, and with English and Spanish officials, our hero grows in stature and earns the respect of his crew as well as his superiors.

Oh, and did I mention his hardest task? He falls in love with a young southern belle whose father is a hard-core Confederate who forbids the relationship.

The author does a nice job describing our hero taking his small ship in and out of the various Cays and bays of the south Florida coast.
