At the Post Office this morning there was a clerk I had never seen before, real small towns so I know most clerks at the 2 PO's closest to me, told me that to mail media mail it was supposed to be educational material only!!!  I said well they are books, she asked if they were educational, I told her that IMHO all books were educational...I learn something every time I read one.  She went ahead & let me mail the 5 packages I had (running a special) because I told her I used this PO all the time w/ NP and she was from another town filling in.

Now, I did read the regulations on this when I first started selling video games on e-bay and I don't recall anything about this!!  As a matter of fact, I do send really large orders of video games media mail and there is not much educational value there!!!

Anyone else ever hear of this?

I've heard similar things reported before.

The actual regulations for media mail are here:  http://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/173.htm

You should certainly read them; you might want to print them out so they can be handy should you come across a confused postal clerk.

At the very least, remember "Domestic Mail Manual" so you can ask them to show you that regulation they think they are quoting in the DMM.

Video games are NOT eligible for Media Mail. They have recently clarified that. If you read the DMM you will see that they do not fit any of the listed categories.

the DMM specifically states books are included in the first section. Tell her to read her regs. Content (as in story plot) doesn't matter they are all "reading matter"

IIRC there was an old defunct USPS rate for educational, didn't think it existed any longer.  Media Mail is just that...media (inc. bound books, CDs, & DVDs, none of which can be blank).  Although there are specific guidelines and limitations (available at USPS website) educational is not one of the requirements.  If your clerk asks again, you should ask her to produce the written USPS rule for that...it doesn't exist.   Her training needs an update

It's been awhile since I've sold video games and most of those were mailed 1st class as they were so light...Thanks to all of you, I will print that out later and keep it in my car.
