And me, I am the Queen, as you may plainly see! King (severely). My Royal consort, please to hold your tongue. You interrupt me when I've just begun ! [To audience. We once were masters of this country-side, But time and chance have brought down all our pride. We have been driven from the light of day, To dwell in holes and caverns far away. While men and women, aye ! and children too, Dwell in the land where once we used to do. Queen. But we can take our pleasure now and then ! And wreak our vengeance on these upstart men. We play our tricks on them whene'er we will, And make them wish that we were further still. ist Troll. We ride their horses in the dead of night, And lead themselves astray, all out of spite ! 2nd Troll. We say a word or two above the churn, No butter comes, although they turn and turn ! yd Troll. We milk the cows and drive away the sheep, And steal the eggs, while they lie sound asleep. 4th Troll. But most of all we take delight to steal Their babies : and we hide them safe away, And pinch their toes and fingers till they squeal, And never let them see the light of day ! King. And don't their parents make a pretty fuss! But in the end they grow up Trolls like us, And live in caverns with the rest of us, And play their tricks on menkind with the best of us.
