This is a mail order bride story. Emma marries Joshua by proxy and then goes out to meet him. She neglects to tell him though that she has 7 brothers and sisters to take care of. By the time he finds out the marriage has been consummated and she has to try to win him back, but he wants nothing more to do with her because she has lied to him. He is very stubborn but she is long-suffering and doesn't give up.
