Grimspell castle. With its dark, imposing stone walls, it certainly looked haunted. As a ghost-hunter, Lady Philomena was accustomed to restless spirits. But she found the dark, imposing nature of the castle's owner far more haunting than any specter. Sigh. I was really looking forward to reading this, because I enjoyed the first two books in the series so much. But it was just so-so for me. First of all Philomena was something like 13 older than Nico, which wouldn't necessarily bother me - if it wasn't mentioned so many times! I get it, she's older, but there was no need to bring it up so much. So annoying!

The story was ok, but I felt like it didn't have the same magic as the first two. The plot was rather slow, but then it felt like the resolution came so suddenly. And the so-called "mudering beast" was ridiculously unbelievable as far as motivation.

On the bright side, there was Tup, Philomena's spirit guide who was really adorable. Fingers crossed that her next book is better than this one!

The third in a series, they do not need to be read in order. This one is my least favorite of the three currently released. The heroine is older than the hero, which I tend to like (seeing as I am no longer 25 myself). This book focused more on ghosts than on magic, and it wasn't as fun, but it was still very readable and enjoyable. I missed that there were no cute magical creatures in this book, like the dragonlet or gnomes in the others.

I don't know why I didn't like this story. I loved the premise and Nico and Phil but the ghost story was severely lacking and rather boring. I absolutely hated Nico's sister-in-law - what a bitch! This is supposed to be part of the Relics of Merlin series but you certainly wouldn't know it. There was a brief chapter at the end of the story pertaining to this but it didn't really flow with the story and seemed like it was dumped into the story just to keep this book in the series. Bizarre.
