I wondered if King could stay away from his usual haunt of horror and the supernatural for the duration of the 3-book Hodges series. The answer, I'm afraid, is no. He started drifting back in that direction with Finders Keepers, the second entry, and abandoned all pretense otherwise with End of Watch.

This third novel isn't bad, not at all. It just wasn't quite the book I wanted. I found it mildly disappointing that the plot set in motion in the first book couldn't be manipulated sufficiently in the real world, and that the bad guy couldn't be bad enough, creepy enough, without being a superhuman monster.

However, King is a writer who knows his craft, so the prose is solid. Characters like Hodges and Holly are very nicely done, memorable even, and the story is involving, disturbing, and often innovative. I stayed interested to the end. I'm glad I gave this trilogy a try, but I still liked its first book best.
