This is the 5th book in the "Green Knowe" series by L.M. Boston, and in my opinion does not measure up to the first and third books where the "magic" events relate to historic reality, or the fourth book which is so emotionally compelling in its relationship of boy to wild animal.
In "An Enemy" Tolly and Ping defeat a witch who wants to take over the ancient house Green Knowe from its rightful owner, by turning the witch's own magic against her.
In spite of my reservations about this title, I heartily recommend the whole series.

Just as interesting as the rest of the books but darker in theme. This adventure in Green Knowe has the children dealing with a witch and some plagues.
