I received two books today. The entire corner is missing, both the front and back covers and all the pages. It appears that someone took a powerful saw and cut off a large chunk of the corner. Is this a swapable book? I know that a part of a front cover corner can be missing, but the complete corner? It is a pretty big chunk missing.

From help docs:

Cover not torn or chewed/gnawed

  • some used book stores cut out a small part of the cover; if the amount missing is less than 1 square inch, this is OKAY
  • a small rip (less than 1 inch) in the cover is OKAY
  • yes, that does say "chewed/gnawed" above.  That means no pet-chewed (or human-chewed) books (this applies to the pages as well)

If it's more than a square inch, I would say definately NOT postable.  Is it possible that it was damaged by the PO?  I'm just wondering if it could have gotten stuck in one of their machines.  If not, then I would RWAP it.

If the cut looks mechanical (meaning, not gnawed off) and there is no text missing ...  then I think it falls into a gray area.  I woudl probably post it  if it was in otherwise good condition.

Unless it was appears that the book was made that way, no I would not repost a book that someone cut off a chunk of the WHOLE book. The cover rules about the square inch apply to the cover not pages. I would consider a book that has had a large part of the corner of the complete book hacked off as not in good condition and I would mark it RWAP if I received one myself.

Cover only would be postable, the whole book...I wouldn't consider it postable.  Might ask TPTB, don't think we've seen this one before and the answer would be interesting.

I would consider a book that all the pages had a section missing to violate this rule.

"No torn or chewed/gnawed pages" from the help docs.

I would RWAP and ask for my credit back because the book is a violation of the rules.
