I was born there, and I believe that it is the greatest State in the Union or certainly that it will be. This is by way of friendly warning that in the pages which follow I shall not regard my State with lofty amusement or bitter scorn. But neither shall I picture it as rife with quaint and assorted folkways, or merely an awe inspiring setting of scenery against which pioneer characters play out familiar frontier incidents. That has been done often, and well, and now the time has come to regard Washington as a common wealth concerned with today and tomorrow.
