Fast read - wonderful to read a man's point of view on complicated love.

I thought this book was going to be better than what it actually was. I took the reviews to this book to mean that it was basically a romance novel written by a man about his love life and his views on it. I found this book to be quite good, but not what I had expected. It was about this man his a whole lot more than just his love life (which really plays a small role). It's more about his relationship with his father and how he views his life when put in a scary situation.
It's a good read, but def. not a romance novel.

I really enjoy Jonathan Tropper's writing. he has a way of making a dysfunctional family fun and interesting. he has wit and a great talent of making you feel for the characters in his stories in a way that surprises me. this was a bitter sweet story. I was sad when it ended.

Another witty family satire about grown up kids, by Jonathan Trooper, very much in the vain of his other stellar book "This is Where I Leave You." Trooper's portrait of contemporary families in the north east, especially Gen X at middle age is remarkably adept without all the strum und strung ala Jonathan Franzen. Jonathan Trooper is a cynical optimist, his characters are crazy and highly flawed but underneath it all, his families poses a redemptive power. The arc of his protagonists normally work along the lines that by accepting ones loved ones as they are, and not who they should be, one will also reach a place of self acceptance. Or in other words don't expect your family to get any saner. These authentic state of catharsis, along with farcical set pieces and a denouement that is both clever and heartwarming makes this book an exceptional read. If you have ever seen the movie "Dan in Real Life". "Little Miss Sunshine." or watch the TV show "Parenthood" this is your kind of book.

I really enjoyed this book! A sort of male-perspective on the common chick lit themes of love, relationships and family, Tropper created three dimensional, sympathetic characters. And the situations he put them in - hilarious! I laughed out loud more than a few times! I was also surprisingly moved at times. He is a talented writer and I am looking forward to reading some of his other books - in fact, I have two others waiting for me at home!

Terrific author and an excellent book although this one not as funny as some of his others. Funny-sad novels are his specialty.
