I'm confused. I thought ex-library books had to be verified with the send and/or were not allowed on here. I've had several members verify that sending an ex-library book was ok. Now, when I have (I thought gently) requested that folks verify before sending ex-library books to me, I'm told that there is nothing wrong with ex-library. Indeed, when I check the rules, they are ok now. Please clarify for me. I swear the rules have changed.

I don't know if the rules have changed or not, but when I joined in 2009, ex-library books were OK to post (without any sort of notice) and have remained that way since. There are some people who like to PM about it first but the site does not require it, as you found, and many people won't (me included). You probably need to make a RC if there are books for which you definitely don't want ex-library copies. |

Hi Lenora, Here is the information from the Help Docs...I received a library book! Is this allowed?Yes, decirculated library books may be swapped at PBS.
If you receive an ex-library book that is not clearly marked "withdrawn" (not all libraries do this), you should contact the library to ask them if this book is still part of their collection.
If you do not wish to receive ex-library books, you should put this into your Requestor Conditions in your Account Settings. |

I've been here since 2007. As far as I remember, ex-library books have always been postable. That some members have, in the past, chosen to verify before sending, had not been necessary -and possibly confused you. Rather than asking members to verify before sending - and, IIRC, requesting a PM in an RC is frowned upon by TPTB - why not set up a"no ex-library book" RC, and just apply (or not) on an order by order basis. The only time TPTB suggest contactin the other member, is underlining etc when using the "textbok" rule - but thats competely different from ex-library. |

When I first joined, I'd send a PM letting people know the book they were requesting were ex-library books. No one had a problem with them, and finally someone let me know that I didn't need to send the PM, so I quit. Now if they have an RC stating no ex-library books, I decline the request, and send the book. Only once did someone say they should have had an RC as they didn't want ex-library books, but they accepted it. So the bottom line is, if there's no RC about ex-library books, there's no need to send the PM. Good luck. Pat |

I've been here since 2005, and AFAIK ex-Library books have always been allowed as long as they fit the Basic PBS Standards. And if you didn't want them to use an RC. I think it's always been that way. |
