Now, in order to fhew the fuperior excellency of the Chriftian difr penfation, it is neceffary to take a brief review of !! thofe former difpenlations of grace, which are mof e largely explained in the foregoing fermon. The firft is that of Adam. No fooner was man fallen from his ftale of innocency, and had loft all reafonable hopes of happinefs, according to that conftitiuion and covenant in paradife which our divines have generally cailed the covenant of works, 'but the goodnefs of God was manifetted in revealing to Adam the covenant or conftitution of grace, asitwas containedin this phfcure promife, the " feed ' of the woman fhall bruife the head ot theierpentj" which, which, in the language of the New Teftament, fig- nifies that the Saviour, in rhe fulnefs of time, fhould be born of a woman, and fhould deftroy this work of the devil.
