Based on a 51 question survey, this study offers a picture of attitudes and practices in family size at the end of the Baby Boom. The Pill is just being introduced, postwar prosperity is at its zenith, immigration has been relatively low for forty years, the Civil Rights Movement is moving north, and the Feminist Movement is beginning. "A central problem for any given couple in arriving at an optimum family size is that of selfishness versus responsibility. It is interesting that having a large family is often described as a manifestation of irresponsibility."
