We cannot make sense of the unprecedented and certifiably insane behavior of many Americans without some historical and cultural context. Andersen provides that context, illustrating that, while it may be insane, it is hardly unprecedented. Americans have been losing their grip on reality for decades if not centuries, and the book presents this history in a detailed and amusing way. He stresses that there has been craziness on every side of the political and social spectrum, although clearly the right-wing has gone the farthest off the deep end. Everyone should read this book and take a long hard look at themselves and ask if this is really the country we want.
