This large-format, highly illustrated book traces Caribbean history from Columbus to the present day, looking at slavery, the colonial period, the struggle for independence and the rise of US regional influence. Questioning the official concept of development, it examines the recent experiences of four Caribbean nations -- Jamaica, Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago and Haiti -- and evaluates their differing approaches towards development. Other sections focus on the role of trasnational corporations in the Caribbean, the problems of regional intergration and examples of alternative, grassroots development.
