Clodagh O'Lochlainn is found dead, strangled and tie to Far Breige, ancient Stone God of Old Irish Faith. Disliked by almost everyone who knew her, the suspects are many including the husband she terrorized. While many have accepted the new faith, fear of the old gods still lurks among the people of Burren.

Mara is a Brehon and wife of a West Ireland king in 16th Century, and with Fachtnan, and her scholars are to investigate the murder. Law enforcement of the period requires not the death of the murderer but a fine of forty-two sets, twenty-one ounces of silver or twenty-one milch cows as well as the honour price of the victim.

A few days earlier Mara gave a large tract of land to the woman owned by her father. However, there are those who believe the father meant the land to go to four first cousins. brothers, who took care of him for years. Since the woman had ridiculed and defamed neighbers and clan members alike the suspects are many.

The case is an interesting one and answers are difficult to pry from the community because so many hated the deceased. Mara involves her scholars in finding evidence and uncovering the murderer. This is indeed another well written novel o the series.
