Hello you Paranormal romance fans out there!
I am new to this genre (after reading the Stephanie Meyer Twilight series and some of the Sookie Stackhouse). I have been steadily picking up the various series by authors such as Sherrilyn Kenyon, Maggie Shayne, Christine Feehan, Lyndsey Sands, P.C. Cast, J. R Ward, Victoria Laurie, Michelle Bardsley...........to name a few. :)
I'm a bit anal in that I don't like to start a series until I have all books accumulated ready to read. Now I'm wondering out of these famous authors, who are YOUR favorites over others. Any that you like BETTER than those I've llsted? Any you would NOT recommend??
I need help deciding how to dig into my ever-growing TBR pile --- please help! :)
Hi Marilyn, Paranormal romance is usually one couple with a happy ending at the end of the book. Other books in the series will feature a different couple in each book. Urban Fantasy tends to be one character throught out the series and there is not always a happy ending.
If you would like to know my favorites now:
Jeaniene Frost - Night Huntress series fabulous - I buy her new and I don't buy very many new books.
Nalini Singh - Psy-Changeling series and the Guild Hunter series
J. R Ward - Black Dagger Brotherhood

For what its worth my top authors (ones I never manage to wait out the WL for) are:
Nalini Singh- Psy Changeling (Slave to Sensation is the first book) and Guild Hunter(Angel's Blood is the first book) series
Kelley Armstrong- Women of the Otherworld (Bitten is the First Book)
Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson Series (Moon Called is the first book) and Alpha and Omega (starts with a story in the On the Prowl anthology)
Rachel Caine - Morganville Vampires (starts with Glass Houses)- these are YA and very well done IMO
Kim Harrison- Hollows Series (Dead Witch Walking is the first)
CL Wilson- novels of the Fae (start with Lord of the Fading Lands)
HEA is Happily Ever After. It is used in the romance discussions as folks will want to know if it is a cliffhanger (ie Rachel Caine) or if it gets resolved at the end of the book. Christine Feehan and Lynsay Sands are examples of HEA. Patricia Briggs, Carrie Vaughn, and Charlaine Harris are not.
Urban fantasy generally has a lot less focus on romance and more focus on action. Examples are Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden books and Rob Thurman's books about the two brothers. There is overlap between the two catagories. It is a grey line, is it more fantasy or more romance?
I too, have been anal about collecting all the books in a series before I start reading it but lately that's been biting me in the butt! I recently listed three series that I just couldn't get through the first book! So now I read the first couple before I hunt down all the rest. (I spend too much on books. lol) But the series that I've read all the books from and really enjoyed so far are:
J.R. Ward - Black Dagger Brotherhood
Kim Harrison - The Hollows
Karen Chance - Cassandra Palmer
Keri Arthur - Riley Jenson
Laurell Hamilton - Anita Baker
Rachel Cain - Weather Warden
Gena Showalter - Lords of the Underwold
Brenda Joyce - Masters of Time
Alyssa Day - Warriors of Posideon
Jeanienne Frost - Night Huntress
Charlain Harris - Sookie Stackhouse
There are more but it's getting late and I'm tired. :)

I am the EXACT same way in that I don't start a series until I have all the books. I'm fairly new to this genre myself, but I will wholeheartedly second the Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson series and the Gena Showalter Atlantis series. If you like things on the lighter humor side (but still steamy!) I just finished the Aisling Grey, Guardian series by Katie Macalister, and it's a keeper for me. :-) Thanks for the post! I'm getting tons of new ideas for my own TBR (like I really need it).
This was by far the most dangerous thread I have ever opened, read... LOL.
I copied and made a list of series to look into myself.. Having a feeling after I add the ones I am interested in, I will topple my WL and fall into the RL. hehehe. Oh boy. =)
I agree -- thanks to all of you who have responded with great suggestions! My book addiction has just soared to a new level as I begin a frantic search into all the new authors and series that are listed here. My husband already says I have enough books in my TBR pile (which actually consists of shelves full, not just a pile) that if I became a total invalid tomorrow (god forbid!) and could do nothing else besides lay in a recliner and read books, I would have enough to last me a life time. (OK, so he just doesn't GET IT). LOL!
Seriously, I love this discussion and encourage many more people to add their opinions and thoughts.
As one of the other poster mentioned, collecting the whole series before reading any of the books can backfire on you (fortunately most paranormals and urban fiction move really fast on PBS). I also get just the first book or two of a series to read before committing. Some of my favorite paranormal authors are Feehan (Carpathian series), Karen Marie Moning (Highlanders series), and Jayne Castle (Ghost Hunters). Have fun!
Being super picky in the paranormal genre, and since you're a Twilight fan I chose series where romance factors heavily....
Gena Showalter "Lords of the Underworld" series, that starts with The Darkest Night, The Darkest Kiss and The Darkest Pleasure. This series is so, so good- trust me! :)
Kresley Cole's "Immortals After Dark" series which starts with "A Hunger Like No Other" http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw_1_7?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=kresley+cole+immortals+after+dark+series&sprefix=kresley
Nalini Singh is also terrific, I throw my hat over in that ring too. ;) I really enjoyed the first 2 J.R.Ward books, kinda liked the 3rd, and they lost me after that- but because so many people *love* them it's worth a shot. Plus the 2nd one is one of the best romances I've ever read.
Has anyone read the Drake Sister's Trilogy? I think it's by Feehan. I have several of the books. Just wanted to know what you thought! Should I read it or post it! Thanks Sonja
PS I'm very new to paranormal!
The only other one I haven't seen mentioned is Mary Janice Davidson. Her Betsy the Vampire series as well as Fred the Mermaid series are good quick reads. Plus lots of humor. :)
Otherwise, I have a lot of these on my lists that I really like. Can't think of anything else in the moment to add to it...
Has anyone read the Drake Sister's Trilogy? I think it's by Feehan.
i do like the Drake Sisters series - but it's 7 books, not a trilogy. :) i haven't read the last one yet. Feehan's Dark series, i read a few of and while they're ok, they're also all very similar so they got boring fast for me.
