Favourite Love Poems Author:Margaret Howard Following the success of 'England's Favourite Poems', we are delighted to present this programme of favourite love poems, chosen by Margaret Howard and Sam Small. The poems cover a wide range of moods and periods, from exquisite sonnets by William Shakespeare, to famous poems by Thomas Hardy and other great names of the nineteenth century. We ha... more »ve also included some Emily Dickinson, one of America's greatest poets. The themes of the poem include fresh, young love, love lost, and the mature love which comes from years of loving, and of experiencing relationships. Sometimes the lovers described in the poetry are beautiful, and loved for that. But occasionally, they are clearly not beautiful in any absolute sort of way: but these characters are adored no less than the others, despite (or even because of!) their physical frailties or quirks, which can be described in the poetry in glorious detail. The music comprises four of Franz Schubert's greatest impromptus, which were written and published in the 1820s. They are played on a Bechstein piano from the late nineteenth century. They were written for intimate occasions: gatherings of friends where music would be made, songs sung and poetry read, and their mix of gentle and passionate moods is well suited to our collection of love poems. Impromptus No 3 & 4 (tracks 13 & 27) are featured in the superb film of Henry James' The Portrait of a Lady, directed by Jane Campion in 1996. 1 Impromptu in C minor D899/1 Franz Schubert (1797-1828) 2 Love from 'Sonnets from the Portuguese' XIV If thou must love me Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) 3 The lover showeth how he is forsaken They flee from me Thomas Wyatt (c.1503-1542) 4 My true-love hath my heart Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586) 5 The passionate shepherd to his love Come live with me and be my love Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593) 6 Her reply If all the world Christopher Marlowe 7 The married lover Why, having won her, do I woo?
